The Celtic Cross is tarot's best-known in-depth spread, laying ten cards in a cross and a staff. From the present situation to obstacles, past, future, inner thoughts, surroundings and final outcome, it analyzes a single question from many angles. With so many positions it's challenging for beginners, but it offers the deepest insight.
When to use it
For an important question you want to explore deeply and comprehensively — recommended once you're somewhat familiar with tarot.
Position meanings
- 1. Present situationThe center of the question — the state you're in now.
- 2. ObstacleThe key factor crossing or influencing you.
- 3. Foundation (past)The root and background this situation grew from.
- 4. Recent pastThe influence just passing, now moving away.
- 5. Goal / possibilityWhat you aim for, or what's surfacing in your mind.
- 6. Near futureThe flow coming soon.
- 7. Your attitudeHow you're approaching this matter.
- 8. EnvironmentThe influence of others and surroundings.
- 9. Hopes and fearsWhat you hope for — or what you fear.
- 10. Final outcomeThe overall resolution if the current flow continues.
How to read it
Don't try to read all ten at once. Grasp the core with cards 1–2 (present + obstacle), follow the timeline with 3–6, then read the inner world and outcome with 7–10.
